Thank God, I passed the examination for wine and acquired the credential called Wine Expert! I started studying in March of this year, passed my written exam in August and cleared the tasting test in October. Yeah!
Sommelier is a well recognized credential, but what is a Wine Expert? I didn't know about this credential until I took this exam.
In Japan, Sommelier is a credential issued by the Japan Sommelier Association. This organization also issues credentials called Wine Advisor and Wine Expert. If you work full-time at a restaurant you are qualified to apply for a Sommelier designation. If you work at a wine shop, you would apply to become a Wine Advisor. If you are in neither of those occupations, then you can apply for the Wine Expert designation.
All three qualifications are obtained by taking a written exam based on the standard text book.
Once you pass the written exam, the examinee next takes a blind tasting exam, usually a few weeks later.
A Sommelier candidate will blind taste 5 liquors ( 3 wines and 2 liquors) plus purform a service demonstration, the Wine Advisor also does 5 blind tastes and then submits to a question and answer session, the Wine Expert blind tastes 6 liquors.
Six (6) liquors includes 2 red wines, 2 white wines, and 2 alcohols other than wine. For example the blind tasting this year for Wine Expert was 2011 Riesling from Germany, 2013 Sauvignon blanc form NZ, 2012 Pinot Noir from USA, and 2009 Syrah from France. The other two alcohols were a single malt whiskey and Galliano.
As for the tasting, we try to get the variety, where it was made, and the vintage right, but the conclusions need to be drawn from the tasting comments we fill in on a special card.
I once had the thought that passing this exam would make me an expert. But the reality is that the world of wine is so vast and deep, it would probably take my entire life to learn it all. I should set some sort of pattern in how I taste wine, and then build my experience from there.
In the process of getting a more formal wine education I learned that one of the things that makes judging wine so complicated is that the French played the big part in building the world of wine. Had it been done by the Germans for example, the evaluations would have been graded by numbers, not by adjectives. Something like acidity from 1 to 5, tannin from 1 to 5, sweetness from 1 to 5 and so on. That would have made things a lot easier for everyone to find their favorites.
But the French are a more poetic people and wanted to express the beauty of wine using adjectives, rather than numbers. Which makes this type of alcohol something special but at the same time, a bit unfamiliar to people outside their boarders.
The wine in this picture is a second label of Chateaux Palmer called Alter Ego.
I was planning to open this bottle of wine if I passed my exam. I didn't realize, back then when I purchased it, that this experience with wine was going to help me to find my own alter ego.
I met many new friends through the exam. I feel these new and good connections will bloom into many new flowers in my life. I truly feel grateful for those who supported me, went through the hard times with me and encouraged me along the way. Thank you, thank you, thank you😘😘
